Local Charity Reaches Out
Local sight loss charity Sight Support Derbyshire is holding an event for Black and Minority Ethnic communities on how sight loss affects different communities and what steps individuals can take to reduce the incidence of visual impairments.
Sight loss is on the increase throughout the population, but certain conditions such as diabetic retinopathy affect people of particular ethnic backgrounds than others. It is estimated that by 2020 the number of people living with sight loss will have doubled to 2.1m and Sight Support Derbyshire want to work with as many different groups as possible to reduce the incidences of preventable sight loss.
Over 50% of sight loss is preventable and Councillor Joe Naitta, a long term Sight Support Derbyshire volunteer will be helping to deliver a workshop on maintaining a good diet, quitting smoking, avoiding weight gain, taking regular exercise and controlling alcohol intake.
