Volunteer Mini Bus Driver
We have our own Mini Bus for transporting visually impaired members (usually from home) to locally organised events, Sport and Leisure activities and pleasure trips to places of interest. The vehicle is capable of carrying a maximum of fifteen passengers and incorporates wheelchair facilities.
What you will do: You will be responsible for safely transporting visually impaired members from home to organised events.
Skills you will need to have: You will be expected to complete the approved test for driving the Mini Bus. Hold a current driving licence. Have good communication skills. A good knowledge of Derby would be an advantage.
Volunteer Mini Bus Escort
We have our own Mini Bus for transporting visually impaired members (usually from home) to locally organised events, Sport and Leisure activities and pleasure trips to places of interest. The vehicle is capable of carrying a maximum of fifteen passengers and incorporates wheelchair facilities.
What you will do: You will be responsible for safely transporting and assisting visually impaired members from home to organised events and returning them home safely.
Skills you will need to have: Good communication skills and patience.
Volunteer Driver for the Mobile Resource Centre
The Mobile Resource Centre serves as a showroom exhibiting specially designed aids and equipment for visually impaired people.
Items on board range from the simplest of kitchen aids to the latest hi-tech reading aids and talking computers, all of which people may try out to see if they meet their needs.
The Mobile is also an information centre on all aspects of visual impairment, including benefits, leisure pursuits and local services, to name but a few. We attempt to visit a different part of the County every day.
What you will do:
- You will assist the Co-ordinator at specific locations in the county.
- You will answer questions raised by people on the Mobile Resource Centre in relation to Sight Support Derbyshire and to aids or equipment.
- You will talk with people visiting the mobile and make sure they are made welcome.
Skills you will need to have: Good communication skills, able to demonstrate and explain use of equipment, have a good knowledge of Derbyshire, have a current driving licence, and have ability to work as a team.
Volunteer Assistant for the Mobile Resource Centre
The Mobile Resource Centre is a custom built vehicle, which serves as a showroom exhibiting specially designed aids and equipment for visually impaired people.
The Mobile is also an information centre on all aspects of visual impairment, including benefits, leisure pursuits and local services, to name but a few.
We attempt to visit a different part of the County every day.

Volunteer Own Vehicle Driver
Volunteers often use their own vehicles for transporting visually impaired members, usually from home to locally organised events, Sports and Leisure activities or to a central pick-up point for coaches.
Skills you will need to have: Good communication skills, a current driving licence and be confident in finding your way around Derby and the surrounding area
For all Volunteer positions:
Training and Support: We will give you visual impairment training and specific training of the tasks. You will only go out on your own after your training and assessment. A member of staff will give you support throughout your training and will meet with you on a regular basis to see how things are going.
Expenses: We will reimburse your out of pocket expenses in line with our expenses policy.
Before you start: You will need to provide us with the names of two people who can give us a reference for you. There will also be a CRB check.
This is an excellent opportunity to help enhance the quality of life for visually impaired people throughout Derbyshire.
