Footballers have £25,000 charity target in sight
Derby County players are to tee off against some of the county's budding golfers to raise money for the club's charity partners.
Four of the current Rams squad will take part in the first-ever Super Rams Charity Trophy later this month.
Sight Support Derbyshire will benefit from the first-ever Super Rams Charity Trophy golf competition.
Money will be raised by the teams who enter, with members of the public being invited to sign up in groups of four, at £100, to take on the players.
Cash from the event, which will be held at the Morley Hayes Golf Club, will go to Sight Support Derbyshire – a charity that helps blind and partially sighted people.
Among those playing will be Derby County skipper Shaun Barker.
He said: "The true worth of good eyesight is often taken for granted but is seldom more beneficial than when playing football, or on a golf course.
"Having seen the lads take penalties blindfolded, it has given us all a real insight into the day-to-day life of blind and partially-sighted people and we're excited to be able to raise some money on the golf course to do our bit.
"We can't wait to take on teams from across the county at Morley Hayes."
Part of the partnership between Derby County and Sight Support Derbyshire involves raising more than £25,000 during the 2011-2 season for the charity.
Last month, Derby County legend Roger Davies captained a side – including Phil Gee, Dick Pratley and Graham Harbey – in a charity cricket match against Spondon Cricket Club.
More than £1,400 was raised for Sight Support Derbyshire as Spondon won by seven runs, scoring 148, with Derby County All Stars on 141.
There are also plans for the club to host a fire-walking event, also in aid of the charity, on November 6, but full details have yet to be revealed.
Martin Wilson, trustee and captain of the Sight Support Derbyshire team, said: "My team can't wait to show these footballers how golf is really played.
"We're expecting to thrash them and to take the trophy back to our head office in Derby and put it in pride of place.
"Derby County have been a great supporter of our work and this is a great opportunity for people to get involved, play some golf at a fantastic course and compete for the honour of being the very first winners of the Super Rams Charity Trophy."
The trophy will be awarded to the winning team in an 18-Hole Am:Am Stableford competition at the golf course, in Main Road, Morley.
A spokesman for Sight Support Derbyshire said: "This is a unique opportunity and your chance to show Derby County football players who is best on the golf course whilst raising money for the charity at the same time."
