Bank Staff Get On Their Bikes For Sight Support Derbyshire

Published 11 November 2015

Staff from a Derby bank cycled the distance from the city to Plymouth to raise funds for a local charity supporting blind and visually impaired people – without even leaving the branch!

The Halifax Bank in East Street held the static bike challenge to raise money for Sight Support Derbyshire on Friday 6 November. The event pitted ten members of staff against each other to see who could pedal 40km in the fastest time, covering a total distance of 400km.

They also raffled off a hamper of goodies in aid of the charity, and staff and volunteers from Sight Support Derbyshire were on hand in store to give information about the charity’s services and advice on good eye health. It was the bank’s second event in aid of the charity and followed a Hallowe’en bake off and cake sale in store the previous week.

In total staff raised £689.18 for the charity, whose services offer practical, emotional and social support to local adults and children who are blind, visually impaired, or been diagnosed as losing their sight.

James Daykin, Assistant Manager at the Halifax, said: “We chose Sight Support Derbyshire because it’s a local charity and we want to give something back to the local community. We’ll be able to see exactly what difference we’ve made.”

Branch manager Ryan Morton, who took part in the bike challenge, added: “Everyone’s been involved, from staff who donated items for the hamper and family members who baked cakes for Hallowe’en and decorated pumpkins, to Pure Gym who provided the static bikes for the day.”

Sight Support Derbyshire’s Fundraising and Communications Manager, Eileen Bagguley, said: “It’s fantastic to see a company like the Halifax showing their support for our charity. Events like this are a great way of team building as well as raising money. Everyone at the bank seems to have really enjoyed the challenge which is what it’s all about.”
