A group run by Sight Support Derbyshire that provides support for blind and partially sighted people in Ilkeston is one of the latest organisations to receive funding from Erewash Borough Council’s Small Grants Scheme. The scheme was setup to improve health and reduce health inequalities in Erewash and the group has been awarded £1,400.
The Operations Manager for Sight Support Derbyshire said “We’re delighted to receive the funding. It will make a real difference by providing a forum where local people with sight loss can find out about support and equipment available to help with day to day living as well as enjoy a good chat with friends".
A small group had been running for over 10 years and formerly met at The Shopmobility centre in Ilkeston, however the group began to out grow the space available. The funding has enabled them to move to the Cantelupe Centre on the Market Square.
The group meets every Tuesday between 10.00am and 1.00pm . In the future the they plan to organise trips out, visits from speakers and entertainers, and to get involved in fundraising for the charity.
One of the members, Nancy, said “It’s a very nice group with friendly people. Since I’ve been coming it is like a life line for me. We have a laugh and we can talk with out being judged. It gets me out”
The group is now open to new members so if you are visually impaired and interested in coming along please contact Helen Rowley 01332 287024
Sight Support Derbyshire also run a befriending service and support people recently diagnosed with sight loss at Ilkeston Hospital. Both services rely on volunteers to operate and the organisation is desperate for anyone with a little time to come forward to see how they can support their work and make life that little bit easier for blind and partially sighted people in Erewash.
