Sight Support Derbyshire’s Kevin Gregory is running his first ever half marathon to raise money for the charity – inspired by the visually impaired children he helps in his job.
Children’s Services Leader Kevin, who lives in Belper, is running the Ramathon on 7 June despite being a complete beginner. He is now in training, spurred on by the children he meets at the regular activity groups and school holiday activities he runs in Derby and Chesterfield.
There are still places available for runners to take part in the Ramathon and be sponsored for Sight Support Derbyshire, one of the race’s charity partners. They won’t have to pay a joining fee but must pledge to raise at least £150 in sponsorship.
Kevin said: “What inspired me to enter the Ramathon and raise money for Sight Support Derbyshire was to see how the children and young people gain confidence through attending the youth groups and the pleasure they achieve from the holiday activities. Seeing the effects of our charity at first hand shows what a difference we can make to the lives of people with sight loss.
“By running the Ramathon, not only will I be challenging myself to get fit and healthy, I’ll also be making people aware of the charity which to me is very important. There may be other children and adults in Derbyshire who don’t know about our services.
“Before I started training I’d only ever run for the bus. I have always enjoyed lots of walking, especially around the Peak District, so I’ve started training by walking and then gradually increasing it to a run. But I know the road plan for the Ramathon and the course is flat, so I thought it’s a good start.
“The children think it’s great that I’m doing this, and it’s encouraging them to do more for themselves, as it shows them that goals can be achieved.”
The sponsorship raised by runners raising money for Sight Support Derbyshire in the Ramathon will go towards providing services for visually impaired children and adults throughout the county. Sight Support Derbyshire offers practical, emotional and social support from the point of diagnosis, and services include rehabilitation, home support, and befriending.
