Derbyshire Disability Player Development Centre

The Derbyshire Disability Player Development Centre, supported by Derbyshire FA and delivered by Derby County in the Community will provide players aged 12-16 with the opportunity to represent their county. Players need to be aged 12-16 and from the following impairment groups; Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf, Partially Sighted and Learning Disability. If you know of anyone who is a talented footballer and wants to progress in their football please contact Derby County in theCommunity.

iPhone and iPod Touch application for visually impaired people

An American company have produced an app that can identify bank notes instantly. Called the LookTel Money Reader, the application uses the iphone's camera to recognise and count US Dollar bills.

The app only works with US currency at the moment, but the company does have plans to introduce support for a variety of other currencies in the near future.

Local Charity Reaches Out

Local sight loss charity Sight Support Derbyshire is holding an event for Black and Minority Ethnic communities on how sight loss affects different communities and what steps individuals can take to reduce the incidence of visual impairments.

Sight Support Derbyshire teamed up with Derby Homes' Junior Warden Scheme in May to learn about visual impairment and complete an 8 miles sponsored walk that raised over £750.

Local charity pleas with PCT not to cancel cataract surgery

The NHS carried out approximately 330,000 Cataract operations in 2008/09 saving the sight of hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. Approximately 5,000 of these operations were carried out in Derbyshire.

Local charity warns of ‘diabetes time bomb’

The health service could face a ‘diabetes time bomb’ according to a new report released today by the NHS. The report says 800,000 Type 1 and Type 2 patients have elevated blood sugar levels which leads to major problems including kidney failure and blindness.  It warned that many of the patients were young or middle aged and could require ‘substantial hospital care in a matter of years’

Elderly told to have regular eye tests to stop falls

Elderly people are being encouraged to have regular eye tests as a way of preventing falls. Local charity Sight Support Derbyshire have spoken out in support of Age UK and the College of Optometrists as they say not enough people request the free check-ups offered to those aged above 60.
