PIP: The impact on blind and partially sighted people

Blind and partially sighted people are being urged to make their voices heard to ensure they are treated fairly. According to the government’s own figures, around half a million people will lose entitlement altogether as Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is replaced by Personal Independence Payment (PIP), with many others qualifying for a lower rate than they currently receive.

Diabetic Retinopathy subject of a new film

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes, which can eventually lead to blindness. This condition is the focus of a new horror film from University of Derby lecturer Tom Craig.

The film Argon Green, which is due for release later in the year, tells the story of an artist who is losing his sight as a result from his diabetes. Mr Craig himself was diagnosed with type one diabetes as a child and in more recent years with diabetic retinopathy.

Eye drug 'could save NHS £84m'

The NHS could save at least £84m a year by using a cheaper alternative to the licensed treatment for a leading cause of loss of sight, researchers suggest.

The importance of DLA - Watch the videos

They are concerned that the challenges they face won't be recognised when the Government replaces Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and that they may lose this vital support, which helps them to live safely and independently.

NHS faces judicial review

The pharmaceutical company Novartis is challenging the use of a cheaper alternative to its drug Lucentis for a common cause of loss of vision.

The NHS in four areas in the south of England agreed last year that a drug called Avastin could be prescribed for the condition wet AMD.

Brave Fundraisers take Zipwire challenge at Pride Park

Derby County fans took part alongside former Rams player Seth Johnson to raise money for three local charities, Sight Support Derbyshire, Rainbows and Treetops Hospice.

The event allowed fans to sail down the wire at a length of more than 200 metres at speeds of more than 40mph.

Countdown to 2012 starts with Pride

A 100 Mile cycle relay (approx. 160kms) is to take place on April 18th marking 100 days to go before the Olympic Games commence, starting from Pride Park stadium and taking place over 3 days ending at Westfield in the city.

Strongman John Evans raised money for Sight Support Derbyshire and Air Ambulance by celebrating his 65th birthday with a Family Fun Day.

On the 31st March at Bettys Farm in Willington John held an Easter Eggstavaganzer and balanced eggs on his head for a world record attempt.

The Hardest Hit North East Coalition are holding a conference on 1 June 2012 that will consider ways to take action against government cuts and examine their impact on people in the region. The event is free to disabled people, their carers and those from charities or Trade Unions.

TV Licensing and RNIB urge blind people to claim concession on their TV Licence

TV Licensing has launched a partnership with RNIB to ensure people who are registered blind are claiming their 50 per cent concession on their TV Licence. Over 40,000 blind concessionary licences were issued in the UK in the last 12 months, however the initiative aims to increase that number further by encouraging anyone who is registered but not claiming to apply for their licence now.

Sheffield blind runner ready for Olympic challenge

‘Inspiration’ is not a word Simon Wheatcroft likes to bandy about.

Walking on broken glass for charity

Sight Support Derbyshire had been asking for brave people walk barefoot over 4 metres of smashed sterile wine bottle glass and for those who accepted the challenge, Thursday March 22nd at Pride Park will be a night they will never forget.

Having been fully trained by Time for Change Instructor Cliff Mann the challengers took their steps onto the broken glass to raise money to help the visually impaired and blind people of the local Derbyshire area.

The Constabulary Choir and Guests sing for Sight Support Derbyshire

On the 17th March at St Nicholas Church Allestree, the Constabulary Choir held its Annual Charity Concert with invited guests Chapel-en –le-Frith Ladies Choir. The evening was a great success, all seats were taken and a cheque for £500 was presented to Richard Wilson of Sight Support, the Choir’s chosen Charity for this event.

Bid for a DCFC shirt displaying Charity logo!

13th March 2012 was a memorable night at Derby County Football Club. Not only did the Rams score a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest it was also the first time the players shirts displayed the Sight Support Derbyshire logo as their Charity of the Year.

Get Active with Walking Football

If you used to play football but now find the pace a bit too much or if you've never had the chance to be involved before, walking football is the perfect introduction to playing football for people aged 60 years and over.

All the rules are the same but with one big difference,  you can only walk - no running - no sprinting – just walking.
