No pain, no gain, for this cause

Some might find it ironic that a sponsored boxing event is to raise money for Sight Support Derbyshire, since so many fighters over the years have suffered permanent eye damage in their sport.

But that thought should not detract one bit from the worthiness of the plans of Clive Fearon, whose white-collar boxing events in 2012 will be dedicated to fund-raising for this cause.

In fact, it arguably makes it the most appropriate charity imaginable to benefit.

And let us salute, too, the 28 competitors who will be taking part in the first event in a fortnight's time.

It is always commendable when people put themselves through the pain barrier to do spon-sored runs, for example.

But these participants will not be career fighters – just people prepared to undergo the pain of being slugged in the ring on top of reaching the levels of fitness required for this demanding sport.

A final thought – how much more money might it raise if members of the public were given the chance to don the gloves and go into the ring to give a pummelling to their everyday work managers?
