Young Blind Piano Star

Young blind piano star joins forces with International piano megastar

Young Zoe Dixon from Littleover is due to appear with “the hottest artist on the classical music planet” this week as she joins Chinese pianist Lang Lang for a never before seen mass piano performance in London. Zoe was chosen from thousands of hopefuls who had submitted video clips of a performance and will perform at the South Bank Centre this coming Sunday (22/05/2011) as part of Young Pianists Week.

Zoe, eleven, has been registered blind since birth with Lebers Amorosis & Nystagmus, entered the contest without mentioning her impairment and was selected purely on her ability on the piano. Sight Support Derbyshire have been supporting Zoe with piano lessons for over the past five years and the charity is thrilled to have played a part in her success. Ges Roulstone, Chief Executive said “To be a part of this young girl’s journey is what Sight Support Derbyshire is all about. Zoe is incredibly talented and no doubt would have been successful with or without our support, but the fact that we could help set her on her way with piano tuition means a great deal to us. Lang Lang is a phenomenon within classical music and to share a stage with him will be a wonderful experience for her.”

Zoe continues to attend Sight Support Derbyshire’s holiday activity sessions and also receives support from the organisation to attend one to one swimming lessons.

Lang Lang has been heralded as the “hottest artist on the classical music planet” by the New York Times. The 28 year-old Lang Lang has played sold out recitals and concerts in every major city in the world and is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and all the top American orchestras. He even featured in Time magazine's annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2008, over five billion people viewed Lang Lang’s performance in Beijing’s opening ceremony for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, where he was seen as a symbol of the youth and the future of China.

Zoe and a number of other young pianists will take to the stage for a day of massed piano activity at Southbank Centre, culminating in a never-before-seen, or heard, experience where the Royal Festival Hall stage is filled with pianos and pianists in a concert led by Lang Lang, in which he plays and presents outstanding new pianists of the future.
