Rams legend puts feet to ultimate test as he walks over hot coals

Former Rams hero Roger Davies is facing his toughest challenge yet – walking on red-hot coals.

The 60-year-old is undertaking the fire-walk at Pride Park to raise money for Sight Support Derbyshire.

For the challenge, Mr Davis will walk across a 20ft bed of hot coals at temperatures of about 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mr Davies said: "I'm both excited and nervous ahead of what will be a spectacular night fire-walking at Pride Park.

"My feet have obviously served me well over the years so I'm keen for them to survive the heat.

"It sounds like a fantastic experience and I'd encourage as many people to join me in the event as they can."

Mr Davies said he decided to sign up to the event when someone at Derby County asked him to take part.

He said: "When I was told about it, I said yes straight away without finding out the ins and outs.

"Thinking about it now, I've got size 11 feet, so it's a lot to burn.

"But I'm looking forward to the experience. I think it's all in the mind so I'm hoping it won't hurt too much."

Mr Davies, who works at Rolls-Royce, said that he was not scared about taking part in the dare-devil stunt.

He said: "I'm trying not to think about it too much.

"There will be lots of people there, taking part and watching, but that comes with the territory. I'm used to having 80,000 people watching me."

And Mr Davies said he was trying to get some more famous faces involved in the fire-walk.

He said: "I'm going to ask around to see if there's a few people who will do it with me and get some more people involved.

"I just want to try and get as much money raised for the great cause as possible.

"It's all very safe and if you channel your thoughts, I don't think it's going to hurt. I hope it doesn't too much, anyway."

The event will be run by Time4Change. The instructor, Cliff Mann, has spent three decades helping people cross the coals.

Mr Mann is the European record holder for the longest fire-walk, walking 60ft over red-hot coals.

He said: "A fire-walk is the most inspirational journey you will ever undertake.

"It is, as the name suggests, a bare-foot walk over red hot wood embers measuring about 800 degrees. No tricks, no special effects. Just you and the fire."

The fire-walking challenge is at Pride Park on Sunday, November 6.

A full two-hour training session will take place at 7pm with the fire-walk starting at 9pm. To take part, a minimum of £100 sponsorship money must be raised.
