Sight Support Derbyshire Patron: The Duke of Devonshire, KCVO, CBE, DL

The (12th) Duke of Devonshire succeeded his father in May 2004.  He was educated at Eton and Exeter College Oxford.  After Oxford he worked in the book publishing until his early thirties. Since then he has devoted the greater part of his time to his family businesses, including assisting in the management of the family estates in Derbyshire, Eastbourne in Sussex, Lismore in Ireland, and Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire.

He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for “services to racing” in 1997. The Duke was knighted in the New Year’s Honours list (Jan 2009), for his services to the Crown.  In August 2008 he was appointed to the position of Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire and was installed as the third Chancellor of the University of Derby.

In November 2010 the Duke joined the Shadow Board of the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derby, Derbyshire Nottingham & Nottinghamshire.

The Duke has followed on from his father the 11th Duke of Devonshire in being the Patron of Sight Support Derbyshire.

Charity Trustees

Charity trustees are the people legally responsible for the overall management and decision-making in a charity. Sight Support Derbyshire has volunteer trustees and their backgrounds are detailed below:

Acting Chairman: Bill Carpenter, BSc, MSc

My previous experience is as a Senior Manager with Rolls Royce and Deputy Regional Director of Business in the Community.

I have the time, energy and experience to offer and empathise with the visually impaired community. I want to support more visually impaired people of all ages and backgrounds.

Martin Wilson, MA Oxon

I joined Derbyshire Association of the Blind in 2003 as a volunteer driver on the Mobile Resource Centre and the minibus. A native of the County of Essex and a graduate of Oxford University I spent 34 years in the Marketing, Sales and Commercial areas of Rolls-Royce based principally in Derby but also nearly three years in New York. This entailed working with customers all around the World. Married to wife Gill, we have two children and one grandson. I became a board trustee in September 2009.

Other interests are aviation ( I held a  Private Pilots Licence for nearly 20 years), driving (including articulated lorries) , D.I.Y, travelling and golf.

Howard Birchall

Sight Support Derbyshire were a great help to me when I first lost my sight, and I felt I could give something back to help others by becoming a trustee. I have done various fundraising challenges, including the “three peaks” and the London Marathon. From working as a Hospital Eye Clinic volunteer I think Sight Support Derbyshire can be a great source of help and information to many visually impaired people.

Graham  Middleton

Since losing my sight in 1996 I have found Sight Support Derbyshire a great help and support. I became a board member in 2003 to help the organisation develop and expand while expressing my views as a VIP (visually impaired person).

I enjoy swimming, sailing and the theatre. Recently I have been involved with the Audio Description Service for Derby Live. I am pleased to report that there are now more audio describers so members will be able to enjoy more theatre productions with touch tours and audio description.

Norman Morris, MA, MSc

I am a retired teacher of mathematics who came to Derby in 1974. I became a member of the Board (DAB) having retired in 1985 and have been a member ever since. That must make me one of the Grand-daddies of the association who has seen many positive changes.

Richard Perkins, DL

I was born in Surrey 1939. My Father was killed the following year at Dunkirk in May 1940, so I moved back to Derbyshire 1941.

I was the Managing Director of a family company in the 1960s called Thos Wragg and sons Ltd who were manufacturers of drainage pipes and refractories.  I worked in Abu Dubi getting the main drainage contract and built the company up with takeovers in clay roofing tiles, blue engineering bricks, clay deposits and open cast coal waste disposal.

I sold the company in 1986 to Redlands Ltd. I was a non executive director of Tarmac Building materials in 1989.  I was the High Sheriff of Derbyshire from 1997-98 and Deputy Lieutenant in 1998. I am now retired but I still take interest in family farms in Derbyshire and Shropshire.

Lucy Moore, BA (Hons)

After becoming visually impaired, aged just 32, I received vital support from Sight Support Derbyshire.  I could no longer continue my career path as a designer, I had my driving license revoked and came very close to losing my house all of which Sight Support Derbyshire supported me through.
I became involved in many fund raising projects and I’ve volunteered in the hospital, with children’s projects and helped with Visual Awareness Training.
My involvement with Sight Support Derbyshire as a service user and service provider has given me experience that I feel is beneficial for a Trustee.

Chief Executive: Ges Roulstone, BA (Hons), MSc, FRSA
