What is World Sight Day?

Sight Support Derbyshire are promoting World Sight Day (Thursday 13th October) as part of an international effort including the World Health Organisation(WHO),
International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), eyecare organisations and many others all working together to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020. We aim to give everyone in the World the Right to Sight.

There are events taking place on October 13th in over one hundred countries across the world and Sight Support Derbyshire will be leading the event in Derbyshire.

What are Sight Support Derbyshire doing for World Sight Day?

As Derby County’s Charity of the Year, Derby County have supported Sight Support Derbyshire and World Sight Day by dedicating their home match against Southampton to raising funds for local blind and visually impaired charity.

Collections will be held before and after the game by over 30 people, there is a silent auction where the highest bidder will deliver the matchball and players shirts will be auctioned after the game.

Jason Shackell, Captain of Derby County says “World Sight Day is a tremendous opportunity to remind people how valuable their eyes are and how easy it is to make sure they are protected. We are so pleased to be able to help Sight Support Derbyshire make a real difference to local people. We urge fans attending the Southampton game to support Sight Support Derbyshire in any way they can”.

Som Bhalla who has lived with sight loss for over 70 years says “You must protect your eyes and go for regular eye tests. When I was growing up I did not have any support, what Sight Support Derbyshire do for all ages is absolutely brilliant”.

Sight Support Derbyshire will also have an information stand outside SpecSavers ,Crown Walk on the 13th October. Sight Support Derbyshire will be providing information on how to look after your eyes and how we can support people who are affected by sight loss or visual impairment. SpecSavers will be cleaning and providing simple repairs to glasses.

Raj Gohil from Specsavers says "Specsavers Derby are excited to be working with Sight Support Derbyshire to raise awareness of World Sight Day 2011. We will be spending the day raising awareness of the simple practical steps that everyone can take to put an end to preventable sight loss in Derby and Derbyshire”.
